A fabric's resistance to water pressure is measured in mm of water column (test based on ISO 811). The higher the pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. Here are the waterproof values of the RC500 jacket: 8 mm before washing, 000 mm after 5 washes.
Not only is the fabric important to the waterproofness of the product, but so is the construction of the jacket. On the RC500 jacket all the seams are taped and we have chosen a YKK AquaGuard® waterproof zip.
To determine whether a fabric is breathable, its evaporative resistance (RET) is measured (test based on ISO 11092). The lower the resistance, the more water vapor generated by the body during activity is released from the fabric, and the more breathable it is. • RET <6: extremely breathable, suitable for the most intense efforts • RET 6 to 12: very breathable, suitable for moderate efforts • RET 12 to 20: moderately breathable, not comfortable during exercise • RET >20: not very breathable, not suitable for exercise
The RC500 jacket has a membrane component. The membrane is a type of very thin micro-perforated plastic film (polyurethane) that makes the component waterproof while remaining breathable. It has the advantage of being more flexible, lighter, stronger, and more breathable than a coated component. The coating is similar to a paint applied to the inside of the fabric that makes the component waterproof. It is less expensive than a membrane and requires a lining to protect it.
As you know, if the road is wet, water splashing from the rear wheel onto your bib shorts can be very unpleasant. To solve this problem, we've equipped this RC500 jacket with a retractable flap at the lower back. It can be discreetly tucked away at the back of the jacket, making it very practical when you need it. It goes without saying that installing mudguards on your bike will further enhance protection against splashes.

I bought this jacket in August 2023. I would say it was used normally, 2/3 outings per week. A few machine washes. Result today, not even a year after its purchase, the letters "van rysel" have almost all come off. A detail but for a jacket at €55 meh. A few euros more for a big brand and this kind of detail won't happen, at least not so soon. Quality and affordable prices from Decathlon are no longer really there today.
