Breaking in bicycle brake pads is an essential procedure to ensure good braking efficiency:
Proper break-in gradually warms the pads and rotors to improve their efficiency. Before setting off, make sure the rotors are clean and consider replacing them if you need to change the pads. Wear a helmet, use a computer or GPS, and choose a flat, dry, and traffic-free road.
What tools will you need:
When doing this, you may need: A pad spreader, brake cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
Some additional tips for breaking in brake pads:
Proper break-in begins with using only one brake at a time to protect the pads. It's recommended to ride on a flat, smooth road without harsh braking. This process requires patience, as it can last up to 30 minutes. If you notice colored reflections on your discs or impaired braking, this may indicate glazed pads. Have them checked at a Decathlon workshop.
The running-in procedure consists of gradually braking several times, at increasing speeds:
Alternating between front and rear brakes is essential for a balanced break-in. Start at 15 km/h and gradually brake down to 5 km/h, ten times. Repeat at 20 km/h and then 25 km/h. After each step, ride without braking for a few dozen meters to allow the system to cool.
