Breaking in bicycle brake pads is an essential procedure to ensure good braking efficiency.

It consists of gradually heating the brake pads and discs in order to create a homogeneous contact surface. Before carrying out the break-in, it is important to follow the following instructions: -Clean the brake discs. If you change the pad, it is also recommended to change the discs.-Equip yourself. Wear a helmet and make sure you have a bike computer or GPS.-Choose a safe place. Ride on a flat, dry road, free of obstacles.

The break-in procedure consists of gradually braking several times, at increasing speeds.

It is important to alternate the front and rear brakes, and to follow the following steps: Step 1: Drive at 15 km/h and gradually brake to 5 km/h, 10 times in a row. Step 2: Drive at 20 km/h and brake gradually to 5 km/h, 10 times in a row. Step 3: Drive at 25 km/h and brake gradually to 5 km/h, 10 times in a row. Between each step release and roll a few tens of meters in order to properly ventilate the disc and the caliper.

Some additional tips for breaking in brake pads:

-Use one brake at a time to avoid overheating the pads.-Drive on a flat road to avoid jerking.-Do not apply sudden braking while breaking in.-Be patient. Break-in can take up to 30 minutes.-If you notice a rainbow streak on the discs or if your braking is less effective, this means that your pads are "icy". IF this is the case, don’t hesitate to go to a Decathlon Workshop.
