What socks?
A waterproof shoe will be less breathable than a non-waterproof shoe. Socks like the MH500, MH520, and MH900 in high or medium cuts (adapted to the height of the shoe) are therefore recommended to wick away perspiration and reduce friction.
Waterproofing test
In the lab, the shoe is placed in water up to mid-upper on a mechanical arm that generates flexes in the shoe to simulate a number of steps. Thanks to this test, we can determine a time and a number of kilometers that the shoe can achieve while remaining dry. Then we validate in the field and in the rain that the shoe keeps its promises in use.
Extend waterproofing
To keep your feet dry, it is advisable to use a waterproof gaiter or mini-gaiter which will protect the top of the shoe from water entry, but also from stones, sand, etc. We advise you to re-waterproof your shoes twice a year using a waterproofing agent (search for "waterproofing agent" on our Decathlon website) which will restore the original water repellency and combat external stains.

What frequency and intensity of hiking?
We have classified our products in terms of performance and features to suit 3 levels of Mountain Hiking practice: - Occasional: around ten hikes per year of around 3 to 4 hours duration, less than 10km and less than 700m of elevation gain. - Regular: around twenty outings per year. 4 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km, 700 to 1200m of elevation gain per outing. - Intensive: more than 20 outings per year. More than 6 hours, more than 20 km, 1200 to 2000m of elevation gain per outing.
How to maintain your shoes?
- Let air dry. - Remove dried mud with a fairly stiff brush. - For stains, clean with a brush and a little warm water. - Let dry. - Spray a re-waterproofing spray to restore water repellency to the upper.
Optimize the capabilities of your shoes: replace your insoles!
The original insole in your shoes is designed to fit as many feet as possible. Changing the insole can provide: 1. Better support: Some insoles are pre-shaped or reinforced to better support the arch of the foot. 2. More comfort: Insoles can also provide warmth and/or cushioning. 3. Longer life: Restore the support and comfort of your shoes by replacing the insole each season.
Sole with grip
The grip of our soles is certified. To qualify, the shoe must pass laboratory tests to evaluate the grip coefficient on different surfaces (smooth, rough, dry, wet). To validate these tests, we have the quality of our soles evaluated in the field, in the mountains, by a representative panel of testers over 500 km.
Which size to choose?
The most important thing is to try on several sizes and models of shoes to find the one that best suits you! You can go up a size from your usual size to prevent your toes from hitting the stop when going downhill, provided your foot is held well to avoid friction. Tip: keep your toenails short and check before any long descent that your lacing is tight to prevent your foot from sliding towards the front of the shoe.
Buying advice / how to try on your shoes?
Some Decathlon stores are equipped with a test course. 1. Try on both shoes, standing up, with the socks you use for hiking. 2. Tighten the laces, taking care to evenly distribute the tightening. 3. Check two points: - the heel does not lift before the shoe when walking uphill. - the foot does not slip and the toes do not hit the front when going downhill. 4. Try on several sizes and models. Use them gradually to break them in to your feet.
Product Comments

I have been using them for 2 years on mountain hikes. always comfortable in it, never had a blister and always dry, as long as you use a waterproofing spray. For my use they are very good, especially considering the price.
for a Sunday hiker like me, this is perfect, good fit, correct grip, well closed ankles, light and pleasant
Improvements compared to the previous vintage. But the tongue should be wider, to penetrate more laterally into the shoe. Otherwise good!
